Enos Gordon Goudey came to the U.S. in 1881 and entered the employ of Jordan Marsh Company;
then went to the Beeman Chemical Company, Cleveland Ohio, promoters of the Beeman's Pepsin
gum in New England. In about 1904 the Beeman Chemical Company was taken over with other
concerns, forming the American Chicle Company. Enos Goudey represented this firm in New
England with an office at 170 Sumner Street Boston, Massachusetts before 1918. Enos Goudey
then founded The Goudey Gum Company
in 1918. He was president of the company until January 13, 1932 when he sold it to the Corning
Family. He continued with the company for some time in an advisory capacity. He was nearly 70
years old at the time of the sale. He finally left the company permanently, after 1933, a wealthy man. He
later moved to Florida where he bought a home. Eventually he moved back to the family home in Barrington
Passage and lived the rest of his life there. When I interviewed some old-timers in Barrington Passage they
said the old man lived alone which indicates that his wife pre-deceased him. In the 1910 and 1920 census records Enos Gordon Goudey was living in Brookline, Norfolk Co,, Massachusetts with his wife and two daughters. by 1929 he had purchased a $125,000 mansion at 28 Bristol road Newton, Middlesex Co., Massachusetts. He was living there when the 1930 census was taken with his wife and both daughers. Both daughters subsequently married after 1930. Dorothy married the company doctor whose name was Dr. John Francis Correa II. |
