Gertrude was married to Henry Tedford who was killed in the Revolutionary War about 1776 or 1777. At the end of the war "Gitty" Tedford and her four children were among Loyalist refugees who were transported to Shelburne, Nova Scotia in 1783. They were granted a house on Digby Street between Fanning and Morris Streets. It is doubtful that they ever built on the site. As with many loyalists, Shelburne did not work out well for the Tedfords. They migrated to Yarmouth by 1786, where they contributed much to the early settlement.

Apparently there are orders of the NJ Commission of Public Safety to Lt. Gifford Dally to escort Gitty and her minor children to "the enemy" at Staten Island. I have not seen a copy of these orders.

"In the Minutes of the Committee of Safety of New Jersey I found some info on GIFFORD DALLY. This book is in the Pennsylvania Genealogical Library in Philadelphia. I was there in ca. 1985. This is from Book 1,but they did not have book 2 or any others."

LOYALIST CLAIMS P.A.N.S. MICROFILM MISC "L" REELS 1&2, V.24: 462-463.

Gitty Tedford late of East New Jersey, Sussex County but now of Shelburne Maketh Oath and Saith, That She resided at at the said place in the province of nova scotia from the 15th of July, 1783, to the 25th of March, 1784: and this Deponent further saith, That She was utterly incapable of preferring or delivering to the Commissioners (appointed by Act of Parliament, passed in the Twenty-third Year of the Reign of His present Majesty, intituled, An Act for appointing commissioners to enquire into the Losses and Services of all such Persons who have suffered in their Rights, Properties and Professions, during the late unhappy Dissentions in America, in Consequence of their Loyalty to His Majesty, and Attachment to the British Go-vernment; ) or at their Office, any Memorial, Claim, or Request, for Aid or Relief, on Account of this Deponent's Losses, during the late unhappy Dissentions in America, within the Time Allowed by the said Act, for the Receiving Such Claims, by Reason that this Deponent, durnig all Such Time, viz. Between the 15th of July, 1783 and the 25th March, 1784, lived of resided at the aforesaid place and that she never knew anything of the act of Parliament till after the Reverend Doctor Walter was gone to England. She also had her Claim made out and made application to Justice McEwin and applied to Mrs. Walter. Both informed her that it was too late as Doctor Walter`s return was shortly expected. Her poorness of circumstances and having a large family to support prevented her forewarding it before this time. She therefore relies on the Mercy of the honerable commissioners.
